I. Working Principle
Signal Acquisition: The PT voltage transformer introduces the generator
voltage and the power grid system voltage. Simultaneously, it acquires feedback
from the turbine guide vane (gate) opening and circuit breaker position contact
signals, sending them to the board's analog and digital channels.
Comparison Calculation: The board's internal CPU calculates voltage
difference, frequency difference, and phase angle difference in real time and
compares them with the system's set grid connection allowable window.
Closed-Loop Regulation: Outputs regulation commands to the governor,
controlling the turbine guide vane gate opening, changing the unit speed and
voltage, and continuously reducing the frequency and phase angle
differences.

Closing Output: When the frequency difference, voltage difference, and
phase angle are all within the allowable range, the internal relay outputs a
closing command, closing the generator circuit breaker to complete grid
connection.
Interlock Protection: For parameter exceeding limits or signal
disconnection, the closing circuit is double-interlocked by hardware and
software, prohibiting asynchronous grid connection. Simultaneously, a fault
alarm is output and reported to the upper control system via the VME bus.
Self-Diagnosis: The board continuously self-checks power supply, data
acquisition channels, and bus communication. An abnormality illuminates the
panel fault LED.
II. Core Functions:
Automatic Quasi-Synchronous Grid Connection: Fully automatic detection of
voltage, frequency, and phase; automatic adjustment of the unit; outputting a
circuit breaker closing command when conditions are met.
Turbine Guide Vane (Gate) Interlocking Control: Outputs control signals to
adjust the guide vane opening, coordinating grid connection and load connection.
This is the origin of the name "Gate Control Unit."
Synchronization Interlocking Protection: Directly blocks the closing output
in cases of excessive frequency difference, phase angle exceeding limits, or PT
disconnection, preventing asynchronous impacts from damaging the generator.

Local/Remote Mode Switching: Supports local manual synchronization
operation and also receives remote commands from the DCS/upper-level system.
Status Acquisition and Feedback: Collects circuit breaker open/close
positions and gate opening, uploading operating status and fault codes.
Hardware Self-Diagnosis: Power failure, channel damage, and bus
abnormalities trigger panel indicator lights and system alarm outputs.
III. Application Scenarios:
Hydropower Plants: Automatic grid connection of turbine generator units and
control of guide vane gates are the primary applications of this board.
Synchronization and Grid Connection Control of Small and Medium-Sized
Thermal Power Units and Gas Turbine Units:
Plant and Mining Self-Supplied Power Stations and Distributed Energy Power
Stations: Control of unit grid connection and disconnection from the public
grid. This card is used as a synchronization gate control card within the
control system rack of an older ABB VME architecture unit.
IV. Usage Precautions
Hardware Installation
This is a VME rack-mount card. Before inserting or removing it, the 24V
control power supply to the rack must be disconnected. Hot-swapping is
prohibited, as it will burn out the backplane interface of the card.
Ensure proper chassis cooling. Operating temperature: -20℃ to +60℃. Avoid
damp, dusty, and high-vibration environments for the rack.
Keep the gold fingers of the VME slot on the backplane clean. Poor contact
will result in communication loss and random fault reports.
Wiring and Signals
The PT voltage input circuit must use shielded cable, with the shield
grounded at one end. The high-voltage PT circuit and the 24V low-voltage circuit
should be routed separately to avoid interference and synchronization
errors.
Short circuits are strictly prohibited in the PT secondary circuit. After
wiring, verify the phase sequence. Incorrect phase sequence will directly lead
to grid connection failure.
The gate opening feedback and circuit breaker position dry contact wiring
must be secure; loose connections will cause synchronization logic
abnormalities.
Parameter Setting
Frequency difference, voltage difference, and phase angle closing window
parameters must be strictly set according to the unit's specifications. An
excessively large window setting will cause grid connection impact; an
excessively small window will result in closing failure.

After replacing spare parts, the internal configuration parameters of the
circuit board must be verified. The default parameters of new/removed circuit
boards may not be compatible with the field unit.
Fault Risk Warning
PT disconnection and wiring interference will cause missynchronization
risks; a simulated transmission test must be performed after maintenance; do not
directly connect to the grid with a real unit.
